Very Fine, Antique Persian Tehran Rug Allover design Fine Kork Wool (Cashmere)

This Persian Tehran rug is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 115, p. 176.

The earliest Tehran rugs probably do not predate the 1920s. This is a powerfully drawn version of one of the best-known and characteristic prayer rug designs. It was popular all over Iran and derived from the more ‘naturalistic’ millefleurs designs associated with Qashqa’i weavers and, in turn, derived from Moghul Indian examples of the 17th and 18th centuries. Although the design has travelled a long way from its source, recognisable elements survive, including the large and ornate central vase with its floral bouquet, the mound on which is stands and the pair of flanking cypress trees.
