Magnificent Old Persian Tehran Rug Allover design Fine Kork Wool (Cashmere) and Silk

This Persian Tehran rug is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 114, p. 175.

This is an impressive early example of Tehran weaving, the earliest examples of which probably to not pre-date the 1920s. This carpet has field designs associated in particular with 19th century Bijar (or Garrus, as the region was previously known after the ruling Kurdish tribal group); indeed it has the same ‘flower and palmette’ field design as on the famous McMullan carpet in the Metropolitan Museum with its altered date of 1794. Both the main border, with its distinctive palette, and the beautifully drawn inner and outer guards, are also exactly what one would expect to find on 19th century Bijar examples. Early Tehran carpets, it should be noted, are comparatively rare and are almost always of very high quality.
