Persian Bakhtiari Square Carpet – Wool

This Persian Bakhtiari carpet is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 212,  p. 269.

This is a particularly beautiful example of the Bakhtiari ‘garden
tile’ pattern with generously proportioned motifs. It dates from around
1900-20 and was almost certainly made in Shahr Kord, in the Chahar Mahal
Valley. Each compartment of the curve-sided hexagonal lattice contains one
of four distinct designs: a stylised floral arrangement, a cypress tree, a
weeping willow or a stylised plane tree. The arrangement of the motifs can
be ‘read’ either vertically or diagonally; in either case, the strict alternation
of most rows is not followed in some so as to create an added visual
tension and avoid monotony. The colours are particularly beautiful, as one
would expect from a Bakhtiari weaving of decent age.
