Persian Rasht Square Embroidery Textile

This Persian Rasht embroidery is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 319,  p. 396.

This embroidery has a usual floral pattern, in this case a lattice.
The use of widely spaced single botehs in an otherwise undecorated
border is quite usual and makes a dramatic contrast between field
and border. This piece is unusually large; as with the cotton ground
embroideries from Uzbekistan called suzani (the Farsi word for needlework),
such Rasht embroideries are frequently made in matched sections.
However, as can be seen here, there are often subtle differences in
both colour and design from section to section, suggesting that each
was embroidered by a different female member of a household.

Persian Rasht square embroidery textile handwoven from silk on tufted wool in Iran. Items of this size are also known as oversize with respect to a typical room.
