Fine old Bidjar carpet, northwest Persia, wool on cotton foundation

This particular pattern, consisting of an offset repeat of an irregular cartouche containing sprays of stylised roses (gol farangi), was obviously popular, and continues to be so judging from the number of times it is encountered in Bidjar weavings and  woven in other weaving centres. This pattern is particularly present from the early 20th century onwards.. The pattern itself is derived from an established European textile pattern, the shape and outlining of each cartouche retaining a strong flavour of 18th century French rococo design.
