Persian Sarab Runner Allover design Wool Pile

Weavings classified as Sarab are woven in the workshops in the city of the same name and in town and village workshops within the district of Sarab. Sarab boasts a long and accomplished tradition of weaving particularly associated with the revival of Persian rug production established towards the end of the 19th century. Their rugs, carpets and runners are very distinctive and display formal patterns normally drawn in a rectilinear style displaying stylised or abstract floral forms with motifs often totemic in appearance. This style of representation is intriguingly based on tribal traditions.

This runner displays the characteristics associated with Sarab weaving. The wool is wonderfully soft and lustrous and long staple which creates a durable hard-wearing weaving. The design is finely drawn with great clarity, fully open and spacious with the bold medallions presented on a plain ground. This arrangement ensures that the composition is easy to read and artistically accomplished. The colours are from the traditional regional palette. Camel shade back grounds are frequently seen in Sarab weavings and is a superb colour to offset other colours used in their weavings. This is the case in this runner with camel, ivory, red, salmon red, blue, brown and green all juxtaposed in a way that maximises the visual impact of the design. The ivory border effectively frames the field design as a contrasting colour. Furthermore, the  pattern details within the ivory border contrasts with the bolder more open design as seen in the central field thus effectively giving balance to the overall composition ensuring that every element has significance and purpose. This is a fine accomplished work of Sarab weaving.
