Signed Persian Ravar Kerman Rug Pictorial Fine Kork Wool (Cashmere) on cotton

A fine and rare Kerman pictorial rug, central Persia, fine wool on cotton foundation.

Late 19th century.

The pictorial field depicting a biblical scene depicting the placement of Joseph in the well by his brothers with camels and tents together with associated figures in a landscape setting, around an inscription cartouche, within a pictorial border enclosing continuous portrait medallion each enclosing a bust and associated inscription.

This fine Kerman pictorial rug is woven in three registers depicting a part of the biblical story of Joseph. The top register shows camels and figures before tents, suggesting that this is the train of slave traders on route to the desert. The middle register appears to show Josephs brothers in consultation as to what they intend to do with Joseph. The bottom register depicts the lowering of Joseph into the well or cistern concluding this episode of Josephs story.

The depiction of this story is rendered with great clarity with the aid of registers which are specifically used in these stories telling pictorial rugs as a device to explain the action in an easy to understand and easy to read way.

The characters and pattern elements are finely drawn and brought to life by the consummate use of colour, the range of which are from the characteristic, unique Kerman colour palette with shades of blue, pink and Tyrolean purple juxtaposed in such a way to maximise the visual appeal. The border pattern enhances the overall composition. The inclusion of figural portrait busts and associated inscriptions identifies the eleven brothers and Joseph who are the protagonists in this episode of Josephs life ry. These inclusions of text are often seen in pictorial rugs of this type and form an integral part of the composition.
