Antique Persian Qashqai Gallery Kilim Modern | Stripe All Wool

This Persian Qashqai kilim is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 253,  pp. 310-311.

The oldest surviving examples of Qashqa’i ghileems probably do
not pre-date the middle of the 19th century but the sophistication of these is
such that they obviously represent a very long history. It is hardly surprising
that no older examples have survived: flatweaves, although strong, are
fragile compared to pile rugs and such pieces were made by tribal groups
strictly for their own use; they were not traded as export goods and the
comparatively few examples that reached the West in the 19th and early-20th
centuries were brought back as cheap (and very light and easily transport –
able) tourist souvenirs or as wrappings for bales of pile rugs. Even today,
Iranians and Turks find it very difficult to understand why collectors in the
West take seriously what they themselves consider to be crude peasant
weavings. The ghileem shown here is an example of a comparatively rare
group in a long narrow format and with horizontal bands of different widths
and contrasting colours separated by ivory and dark brown ‘running dog’
guards and each containing repeated geometric motifs. They are generally
among the most sophisticated and finely woven of Qashqa’i flatwoven artefacts.
