Karabakh Rug Pictorial Wool Pile

This Karabakh rug is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 339.

The manner in which the individual motifs on this early-20th century Karabakh rug from the south Caucasus are handled is somewhat reminiscent of the Senneh rug illustrated in Plate 268. It may well be that this example was woven specifically to commemorate a wedding; the design is dominated at the top end by a male and female figure standing side by side with, to the left of the female figure, a long inscription in Armenian. Two small rectangular cartouches on either side of the large floral urn further down the field also contain what appears to be an inscription.
