Unique Very Fine Persian Tabriz Carpet Allover design Fine Wool pile on Silk foundation

A Fine Persian Tabriz Carpet, North West Persia, Fine Kork Wool (Cashmere), on Silk Foundation,

Mid 20th Century.

The cream field with a Classical ‘Vase’ design, displaying pastel polychrome ‘in and out’ palmettes and flower head roundels linked by two layers of curvilinear scrolling vines issuing smaller palmettes, flower heads and leaves, within a complementary cream border enclosing flower head roundels alternating with winged palmettes infilled with diagonal vine stems issuing tiny flower heads and leaves

A finely woven Persian Tabriz carpet which demonstrates the work of highly-skilled weavers. Tabriz was once home to the grand carpet schools and workshops of the Safavid Dynasty. Many of the designs that are still created today were first developed for use in the royal courts during the 16th century.

This highly decorative Persian Tabriz carpet displays a magnificent simplified rendition of the Classical ‘Vase Design’ originating from Kerman in South East Persia. The primary large palmette motifs are linked by delicately drawn scrolling curvilinear vine tendrils over two layers which give an element of depth to the visual appearance, consistent with the Classical original prototypes. These delicate vines meander throughout the carpet adorned with flower heads of varying sizes. Further multi scaled palmettes and the addition of small leaves ending in serrated leaves adds depth and movement to the design. The design is not symmetrical which also enhances the visual sense of movement, and presents an infinite repeat suggestion, with partial motifs disappearing behind the borders creating continuity and supporting the visual sense of movement.

The colours are from an extensive 20th Century Persian Tabriz carpet palette, with an accent on magnificent complementary pastel orientated shades of colour combined brilliantly to present a highly decorative carpet in tune with 20th century styles of interior decoration. Shades of green, taupe, coral, pale salmon pink, blue, pale blue and ivory are prominent and juxtaposed to create the most harmonic visual appearance. The vine tendrils and pattern outlining are drawn in a deeper chocolate brown or deep blue shade which helps give definition to the overall pattern all on a contrasting cream background. The border palmettes, flower heads and accompanying plants are drawn in a smaller scale to the main field elements presented in similar colour shades acts as a highly effective frame which focusses attention on the importance of the main field design. The exceptional fine drawing of the pattern elements as seen in this Persian Tabriz carpet is made possible by the use of finest possible wool woven on a fine silk foundation. This Persian Tabriz carpet shows off the exceptional skill of the weavers in creating a magnificent decorative carpet with a 20th Century ‘take’ on an established classical 17th Century design. The colours used would grace traditional opulent interior settings or more modern luxurious surroundings, as a focal point, or as a complementary, harmonic supporting element.
