Impressive Rare ‘Four Seasons’ Pictorial Tabriz Carpet – Signed
Rug #2137Impressive and Rare, ‘Four Seasons’ Pictorial Tabriz Signed Carpet Pictorial Fine Wool on Cotton Foundation
A magnificent fine and rare Tabriz pictorial carpet, Northwest Persia, fine wool on cotton foundation.
Signed.
Circa 1900
The polychrome quartered field depicting the four seasons arranged around a central rhombus medallion enclosing a palace, supported by significant buildings, figures, animals and trees in landscape settings, framed by a complex floral border supporting pictorial corner medallions, and vignettes, inscription cartouches to one end.
This magnificent Tabriz pictorial carpet displays an impressive complex design depicting the four seasons, a theme likely to have been borrowed from western sources. The top right quadrant shows a snow-covered landscape with the trees bereft of leaves, the scene emblematic of winter. The top left quadrant shows a camel train possibly indicating a tribal migration heading for summer pastures and ploughing in progress which would indicate spring. The bottom left quadrant would indicate summer, the trees are in full leaf, the two male figures appear to be suffering from the heat. The bottom right quadrant would therefore suggest autumn with trees losing their foliage and various gathering and feeding activities presented.
All the elements of the design are meticulously drawn in a distinctive style. Intriguingly, the corner medallions depict various biblical scenes which suggest religious inclusiveness. Overall, this remarkably detailed scene would appear to be a celebration of the natural world and how it fits into the yearly cycle of life. Each pictorial element is supported by explanatory inscriptions.
It is not surprising that this outstanding work of woven Persian art is signed by the master weaver
