Fine Signed Tabriz Rug Allover design | Floral Fine Kork Wool (Cashmere) and Silk foundation

A very fine Tabriz rug, Northwest Persia, fine kork wool on silk foundation, signed.

The ice blue field with an all-over ascending design displaying a variety of flowering plants supported by a range of exotic birds, within a pale blue border enclosing continuous ivory cartouches each enclosing flowering vines and birds. Signature cartouche to one end outer guard border.

The city of Tabriz in Northwest Persia was the earliest Capital of the Safavid Dynasty, (1502 – 1736), and as such is most likely to have been the centre of carpet production longer than any other significant centre in Persia. Regarded as the ‘Golden Age ‘ of carpet making, the Safavid Shah’s were avid patrons of the arts in all subjects, and actively encouraged pursuit of excellence in craftsmanship and creativity. Tabriz led the way, and because of this long tradition, Persian Tabriz carpets, influenced by varying cultures over time display a huge repertoire of varying designs from ‘medallion’ to overall repeat patterns. The range of colours is seemingly endless, and the combination of colours used is always carefully considered to create the most harmonic and decorative work of woven art. From these earlier times, these established traditions have continued through to the present day, and many exceptional Persian Tabriz carpets have been made closely based on the ‘original’ Safavid carpet designs.

Patterns and designs also evolve over time and this unique Persian Tabriz rug is an example of such evolution displaying a style of design seen in a small definable group of technically superior 20th Century Tabriz rugs. This group displays a variety of domestic or exotic birds amongst scattered flora drawn and presented in exceptional accurate detail, only possible due the superior quality of the materials and the skill of the weaver. The colours enhance the appearance and have been chosen to produce a harmonic stunning rendition. The colours used here include tones of blue, brown, saffron, green, violet, and ivory, all juxtaposed in such a way as to maximise the visual appearance all on a wonderful ice blue background.

Tabriz workmanship at its very best is seen here presenting a unique design from a recognised group which will inevitably stand the test of time as an exceptional work of Persian woven art. The outstanding Tabriz rug is duly signed by the master weaver.
