Fine Persian Tabriz Pictorial Rug Biblical scene Hebrew inscribed.

This remarkable Persian Tabriz rug displays a powerful emotive scene effectively presented in two registers. The bulk of the composition displays the great Prophet Elijah ascending to heaven aboard  a chariot of fire in a whirlwind. Elijah is depicted with arms held aloft seated in the chariot supported by escorting winged angels. The chariot is drawn by two charging horses amidst flames and swirling sky. The lower register shows a landscape scene with buildings and fields and with a small standing figure of  Elijah’s protege, Elisha. All is presented below a Hebrew inscription.

The masterful weaver has created an impressive ‘all action scene’. The figures are drawn in varying orientations in both large and small scale giving a great sense of movement to the depiction. The galloping horses enhances the emergence and significance of the story. The lower scene is deliberately presented in diminutive  scale to show that the chariot is high in the sky en route to heaven, and with the tiny figure of Elisha left on earth looking on.

The outstanding use of colour ensures that the episode  is presented with the power intended. The figure of Elijah is presented in red robes, which is significant since red is the colour of the Prophets. The supporting angel driving the chariot is presented in blue robes giving balance to this element, and the supporting figures and horses presented in contrasting  light and dark colours, juxtaposed in such a way as to maximise the visual impact of the story. This colour contrast also gives depth, focus and meaning to the composition.

This is a true master piece of Tabriz woven pictorial art, woven by a highly skilled master weaver  able to present a significant biblical scene with the energy that the scene requires.

The story of  Elijah  is seen in: 2 Kings  2:1 – 18.
