Persian Yazd Carpet – Fine Wool – Oversize

Persian Yazd carpet handwoven from fine wool in Iran. Items of this dimension are considered oversize with respect to proportions of a typical room.

The city of Yazd is the fifteenth largest city in Iran, a world heritage site. It is a well-known significant centre for the production of fine silk fabrics, and since the 1920’s has developed into a weaving centre of fine carpets. Their carpets tend to display designs based on traditional 17th century Safavid Persian carpet compositions, defined by the presence of floral elements arranged formally, and drawn in a curvilinear style. The style of the drawing of the floral elements as seen here is characteristic of Yazd weaving. The colours are traditional, the tones of which indicate that this carpet was probably made between 1930 and 1950. A period of time recognised as the height of Persian ‘Revivalist’ weaving, under the patronage of Reza Shah Pahlavi, ruled (1925-1941).
