Persian Tabriz Carpet – Fine Silk and Wool

This Persian Tabriz carpet is published in;

THE STORY OF CARPETS, Essie Sakhai, London, 1991.

p. 25.

Persian Tabriz carpet handwoven in Iran from fine silk and wool.

A similar Persian Tabriz carpet is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 202,  p. 138.

This Persian Tabriz  is based on a 17th century ‘shrub’ carpet in ‘vase’ technique.
The carpets that served as models are a famous pair now split between the
Osterreichisches Museum fur Angewandte Kunst, Vienna and the
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. This pair has appeared in carpet literature in
lavish colour illustrations since the beginning of the 20th century and such
reproductions were the source of the many 20th century versions woven in
Tabriz and elsewhere. This is a particularly fine example woven in the mid 20th century.
