Persian Bijar Large Carpet – Oversize – Allover – Golfarangi

This Persian Bijar carpet is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 223,  pp. 280-281.

This particular pattern, consisting of an offset repeat of an irregular
cartouche containing sprays of stylised roses (gul farangi),
was obviously popular, to judge from the number of times it is
encountered both on Bijar carpets from the late 19th and early-20th
centuries and on more ‘primitive’ Kurdish versions based on Bijar
originals. The pattern itself is obviously derived from
a European textile, the shape and outlining of each cartouche
retaining a strong flavour of 18th century French rococo design.
The attractive border design, which has a principal element of a light
blue ‘split palmette’ (rumi) meander, is also typical. This carpet
probably dates from around 1920.

Persian Bijar large carpet handwoven from wool in Iran. This piece has an allover design bearing a motif known as golfarangi. Items with these dimensions are considered oversize with respect to a standard room.
