Extremely Fine Persian Tabriz Carpet
Rug #2034Extremely Fine Persian Tabriz Carpet Medallion design Fine Kork Wool (Cashmere) and Silk
An Extremely Fine Persian Tabriz Carpet, North West Persia, Wool and Silk on Silk Foundation,
The plain ivory field with a central blue lobed, stepped and pointed medallion, enclosing an apricot ochre hexagonal centre piece linked to mirrored winged pendants, lobed coral and ivory spandrels all with polychrome herati, within a blue border enclosing continuous ‘in and out’ turtle palmettes alternating with flower heads linked by angular vines ending in hooked and stepped leaves, plain ivory surround.
Persian Tabriz carpet designs are among the most varied and diversely appealing of Persian urban carpet compositions. Beautifully designed and expertly composed. The city of Tabriz in North West Persia, was the earliest Capital of the Safavid Dynasty, (1502 – 1736), and as such is most likely to have been the centre of carpet production longer than any other significant centre in Persia. Regarded as the ‘Golden Age ‘ of carpet making, the Safavid Shah’s were avid patrons of the arts in all subjects, and actively encouraged pursuit of excellence in craftsmanship and creativity. Tabriz led the way, and as a result of this long tradition, Persian Tabriz carpets, influenced by varying cultures over time display a huge repertoire of varying designs from ‘medallion’ to overall repeat patterns. The range of colours is seemingly endless, and the combination of colours used is always carefully considered to create the most harmonic and decorative end product. From these earlier times, these established traditions have continued through to the present day, and many exceptional Persian Tabriz carpets have been made closely based on the ‘original’ Safavid carpet designs.
Patterns and designs also evolve over time and this unique Persian Tabriz carpet is an example of such evolution displaying a style of design seen in a definable group of technically superior late 19th and early 20th Century carpets. This Persian Tabriz carpet features a precisely geometric, austere, yet majestic elegance. Its impressive, eye-catching open field format is brought to life by fine, exquisitely detailed polychrome herati drawn within layered ochre and blue medallions, and coral and ivory spandrels. The blue medallion is in contrast to the light ivory background, deliberately applied to create the best possible artistic appearance. Shades of blue, red, ochre and ivory are combined sensitively to promote the sophisticated finely drawn pattern details. The blue border composition compliments the main field activity superbly with turtle palmettes arranged in an ‘in and out’ orientation, to introduce fluidity to the composition and drawn in a larger scale to any other pattern detail seen in this Persian Tabriz carpet which serves to act as an effective frame to this majestic design.
This Persian Tabriz is an exceptional example of type and origin, technically extremely finely woven, with fine pattern drawing presented in a range of complementary jewel like colours.
