Persian Qum Moharamat Rug  Stripe Design Wool Pile

The city of Qum is a recently established centre for the weaving of urban style rugs with workshops appearing there from around 1927 onwards. It rapidly became a significant and important centre for the creation of technically extremely fine silk rugs and carpets, though fine wool pile rugs are also made there. The repertoire of their designs is varied, ranging from designs based on Safavid Persian traditions of the 16th and 17th Centuries, through to individual creative designs of unparalleled technical and artistic visual excellence, which can often be described as ground breaking.

This fine Persian Qum rug  displays a design known as the moharamat design, defined by a number of vertical stripes of different widths. In this striking example there are stripes in two colours, blue and ivory, each stripe delicately woven with a variety of ascending plants in muted shades of colour. This composition is superbly framed with an open spacious ivory border enclosing continuous flowering plants which intriguingly appear to be  based on  a style as seen in 16th century Mughal Indian textile tradition. This light airy border  completes the harmonic appearance of this fine design.
