Old Persian Heriz Carpet Medallion design Fine Wool Pile

This Persian Heriz carpet is published in;

Oriental Carpets, ‘A buyers guide‘, Essie Sakhai, London.

pp. 52-53.

Medallion Persian Heriz Around 1900. A beautiful example of the weaving of Heriz, a town in northern Iran. The main motif is a central medallion, typical of Heriz carpets. Orange and navy are the dominant colours, with touches of beige, green and medium blue. Much of the background is muted red, with corner pieces of beige. Between the corner pieces are semi-floral motifs similar in design to the central medallion. The border features an all-over floral pattern on a background of dark muted indigo. The colours are mostly of vegetable origin. The rug is typical of Heriz weaving – coarser pieces tend to be more geometrical in design. Heriz carpets are extremely decorative and durable. They are highly regarded in the West for their beauty, which increases as the colours become muted with the passage of time.
