Very Fine Old Bakhtiari Rug Medallion design | Floral Wool Pile

This rug was woven by Bakhtiari tribal weavers who live in the Zagros Mountains in the west of Iran, and is a particularly fine example of their craft. The carpet is decorated with the ‘gol farangi’ design, which comprises a number of large red roses in the centre of the carpet on a cream background. The whole motif is simplistically drawn surrounded by a shaped red surround, reminiscent of a design style seen in European carpet compositions. The dominant colour is muted madder red, with muted dark navy and a strongly contrasting cream that lifts the central design and the border motifs. All the colours are vegetable dyes. Bakhtiari ‘gol farangi’ rugs are usually about 213 x 152cm (84 x 60in), but are also produced in larger sizes. In Persia, gol farangi means “foreign rose”, giving some clue to the French origins of the design. The ‘gol farangi’  is frequently seen in  Karabakh rugs woven in the Caucasus, as well as some Bijar and Senneh rugs, are woven in this design, but it is more unusual to see a Bakhtiari rug with this motif.
