Majestic oversized Persian Bakhtiari carpet, multi medallion Khan carpet on a white ground, inscribed.

The inscription reading; ‘Khoda Karam Khan Ahmadkhordi (AH 1337)’ Lunar year, AD 1919.

Khoda Karam Khan was an important figure in the Bahmani II of the Bakhtiari, and this carpet was woven to his order by the master weaver Ahmad Khordi.

A particularly impressive Bakhtiari ‘Khan’ carpet, with an inscription reading as above. This massive and unusual carpet is of a size and quality usually associated with the workshops set up in various villages of the Chahar Mahal by the ruling Bakhtiari khans. The primary market for these carpets, which were of the highest quality and had exceptionally rich palettes (the Bakhtiari were renowned as the foremost dyers in Persia), was made up of the large houses that the khans were building on their lands and lavishly furnishing. Some of the surviving residences from the second half of the 19th century are filled with carved and painted wood – work, painted and mirrored glass, carved and inlayed stonework and superb carpets and textiles – in other words the finest and most lavish examples of late Qajar art.
