Persian Mahal Carpet Allover design Wool Pile

This unique Mahal carpet displays a design inspired by a traditional style of design as seen in a specific identifiable group of 17th and 18th century Persian carpets originating from North West Persia. This group is described as the ‘Garden’ design, and is defined by the presence of vertical and horizontal ‘water courses’ supporting and dividing rectangular panels enclosing trees and plants. The idea is that this design replicates the actual layout of a palace garden. In this Mahal carpet version, the ‘water course’ is cruciform in style and delineates the quartered panels each enclosing stylised plants trees and flower heads.

The weavers of this carpet were clearly conversant with traditional styles of classical design.

This fine Mahal carpet is woven with superb lustrous wool and with a particularly tight weave, allowing for the pattern details to be drawn and presented with great clarity, ensuring the pattern is easy to read. Apart from the stylised flora forms seen in the rectangular panels, the weavers have included fish swimming in the water course. This is a most endearing feature. The sublime use of colour brings this remarkable carpet to life. The fine ‘saturated’ dyes are from the characteristic Mahal palette, and have been juxtaposed in such a way as to maximise the appearance of the carpets composition. The weavers have demonstrated their exceptional skill by producing such harmony ensuring this is a fine example of Mahal woven art. Particularly noteworthy is the variation of colour tones seen in the green water course. This variation gives a shimmering effect and seems likely that the weavers were wanting to create the sense of shimmering water.

This is a fine work of Mahal woven art, displaying a unique design based on established classical tradition, made with exceptional quality materials and dyes.
