Magnificent, inscribed Bakhtiari carpet, rare yellow ground, unique design

The inscription reading; ‘The order of Agha Mostafa Gholi Khan-work of Bakhtiari – 1928’ (He was the son of Bibi Maryam Bakhtiari). Bibi played a distinguished role when Bakhtiari forces, with help of modern arms from the German Empire successfully captured Tehran in 1909 as part of the revolutionary campaign to force the central government to establish democratic reforms.

This powerful Bakhtiari carpet, dated 1928, bears a characteristic inscription to one end, reading as above. For practical reasons large white or yellow ground carpets are relatively rare, yet they seem to be particularly favoured by the Great Bakhtiari Khans. This tree of life design is mirrored through the horizontal axis a device often seen in Bakhtiari weavings. Great prominence has been placed on the large high shouldered vases issuing fabulous floral bouquets flanked by pairs of ascending blossoming trees, and cleverly the top end branches and flowering vines form skeletal floral medallions. This amazing composition is brought to life by the jewel like colours from the Bakhtiari palette, since the Bakhtiari were renowned as the foremost accomplished dyers of Persia. Furthermore, the ‘infinite repeat’ device from a horizontal point of view is presented here as can be seen by the partial vases visible peeping from the border.
