Mid 20th Century

The ivory field with a central pastel polychrome pendant floral medallion, linked to mirrored terracotta shield pendants, supported by meandering curvilinear vines issuing pastel polychrome palmettes and flower heads ending in hooked curled serrated leaves, within multiple complementary floral borders.

From the late 19th century, under Armenian direction, a number of significant Turkish weaving centres became established. These centres began weaving rugs and carpets based on a traditional ‘Persian’ style made in wool, silk and with a combination of both silk and fine metal thread. The use of metal thread brocade originated from Persian Safavid times of the 16th and 17th centuries. Hereke and Kayseri are the most famous centres for the weaving of fine silk rugs and carpets.
