Magnificent Persian Tabriz carpet, classical medallion and animal design, large size, fine wool on cotton foundation

This magnificent Tabriz carpet represents a superb example of Persian revivalist weaving. The design of this carpet is closely based in terms of design and subject matter on a significant classical ‘medallion and animal ‘carpet, known as ‘The Coronation Carpet’ and is so named as it was used at the coronation of Queen Victoria’s son, Edward VII, in England 1902. The ‘original’ classical carpet model measures 23ft by 12ft and was believed to have been hand woven in Tabriz in the mid-16th century, of fine wool on cotton foundation. It is housed in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), donated by Paul Getty in 1949, where it remains to this day. Interestingly it is in the same collection as the ‘twin’ to the frequently referred Ardebil carpet.
