Extremely Fine, Rare, Signed Antique Ravar Kerman (one of a Pair) King and Court Rug Pictorial Fine Kork Wool (Cashmere)

A fine and rare Kerman pictorial rug, Southeast Persia, wool on cotton foundation.

Late 19th century.

The polychrome millefleurs field with a large oval medallion depicting the king seated on a throne supported by two seated princes within a rectangular frame cornered by circular floral emblem medallions, framed within a complex complementary millefleurs border.

This magnificent Persian Kerman rug is from a recognisable significant group of ‘Revivalist’ Persian Kerman Ravar carpets and rugs identified as ‘Millefleurs’ (a thousand flowers). These Millefleurs weavings display overall floral designs or are presented with pictorial scenes with varying subject matter as seen in this Kerman rug.

The Millefleurs carpets are understandably highly regarded for their sheer beauty and celebration of technical excellence and as such represent a significant important group of Kerman carpets. It seems reasonable to suppose that the roots of the Millefleurs representation of a highly detailed profusion of blossom as seen in these weavings stems from the Millefleurs tapestries made in Flanders in wool and silk and drawn in cartoons in Paris around 1500. Exemplary tapestries are seen in ‘The Lady and the Unicorn’ tapestries, in the Musee de Cluny in Paris. The Royal Persian Court of the late 16th and 17th Century Court through influence would certainly have had exposure to such exemplary works of art through trade, and thereby in turn influenced the later ‘Revivalist’ designers and weavers of the late 19th Century, and specifically Kerman and neighbouring Ravar.

This pictorial rug represents an outstanding example of Kerman weaving, woven by an extremely skilled, talented weaver.
