This is a fine and rare Esfahan pictorial rug which is woven with a portrait medallion drawn in a European style of depiction. The painted European portrait miniatures inspired Persian weavers during the ‘Revivalist’ period of Persian woven art from the late 19th century onwards. They form a significant and important part of the Persian woven pictorial genre that flourished from that time.

The medallion depicts a representation of Shah Abbas the Great who ruled Persia from 1588-1629. He proved to be an historically important patron of the arts and architecture and was responsible for what is now regarded as the ‘Golden age’ of Persian art. This included the weaving of the finest carpets woven in a court style which have proved to be the most significant influence on fine carpet weaving from then on. It seems likely that the weaver of this rug is paying homage to this important figure in recognition of his significance to the history of woven Persian art. It is also significant that this rug was woven in Esfahan which was the capital city of Persia established by Shah Abbas in 1598.

Apart from the medallion, the design is perfectly mirrored in both the horizontal and vertical axis with a traditional design based on classical tradition. The drawing style is indicative of a style seen in Esfahan rugs made in the first quarter 20th century defined by a mix of both angular and curvilinear drawing styles presenting characteristic flora forms combined with birds. An unusual feature is seen in thespandrels whereby a bird of prey is clasping a duck.

The pattern maintains an open airy appearance brought about by the effective use of colour. These colours are from a characteristic Esfahan palette as seen in the early years of the 20th century. They are saturated and jewel like with blue, light blue red and salmon red, green and saffron used to outstanding effect to maximise the visual impact of each element of the composition. The pictorial element shows a great use of juxtaposed pale and deeper colour tones ensuring the image is presented to maximum artistic effect, set a gainst an ivory ground. Each pattern detail is outlined in black, which gives definition and clarity to each element. The contrasting white background in the main field and border further enhances the ornate appearance of this exceptional work of Esfahan weaving.
