Persian Bidjar Kilim Medallion design All Wool

This Persian Bidjar kilim is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 233, p. 292.

Although there are many different groups of Persian flat weaves, principally tribal in origin, there are three particularly important groups of slit-tapestry weaves of ghileem; the best known is the Qashqai group from Fars, the other two are both the work of settled Kurdish weaves in north-west Persia, the first from Senneh and the second from Bidjar. Ghileems from Bidjar, of which this rug is an example, are easily recognisable by their designs, which tend to stick to one basic format: the medallion and corners embellished with fairly simple but highly stylised floral decoration, and with main border and guards; in other words, it is one of the few groups of kilims from any country that basically follows the overall design of a piled medallion carpet. On this example the central pinkish-red medallion and pendants are placed on a dark blue field with ivory corners; however, because these ivory corners extend down the sides, the effect is to suggest a pinkish-red medallion centre to a larger blue medallion, which is itself placed on an ivory field. This is just the sort of design ambiguity beloved by Persian weavers (see plate 231). This ghileem is fairly old, dating from about 1910-20; like most examples of its type, it has cotton warps.
