Persian Kilim Kilim Modern | Stripe All Wool

This Persian kilim is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 320, p. 397.

This beautiful jajim from the first half of the 20th century is woven in five separate strips that have been sewn together vertically. It is typical of the work produced in the many villages in Mazandaran, the province which takes in the Alborz Mountains, the range immediately below the Caspian Sea, in a narrow strip beterrn the coast and Tehran to the south. Several villages are particularly associated with these flatweaves, including Savad Kuh, Zavareh, Saug Deh, Pachimm and Kelim. Of course jajims (or jijims) are woven in many different areas of Iran and by many different tribal groups. One of their principal structural characteristics is that, like this example, they are almost always warp-faced plain weaves. They are also distinctive in design, almost always having horizontal bands of colour in narrow vertical strips (although there are some very impressive examples in just black and white); Shahsavan and the majority of north-western jajims, on the other hand, almost always have vertical stripes, often embellished with weft-float brocade and other forms of supplementary wefting. It is also worth noting that the Turkish version, called çiçim, is very different in both construction and design.
