Rare Antique Bidjar Kilim Rug Medallion design Fine Kork Wool (Cashmere) and Silk

This Bidjar kilim is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 225, p. 284.

The two principal groups of Persian town ghileems – i.e. those not directly associated with any tribal groups – were made in two north-western areas of Persia centred on the towns of Bijar and Senneh (now called Sanandaj). However, both these types represent the urban flatweaving of the Kurds. This example, c.1890s, is typical of the ghileems of Bijar in that it has an almost plain dark blue field with on large central medallion with cream ground. The use of floral bouquets of the gol farangi type is also typical and the effect overall is one of a design derived loosely from Aubusson models. Like the Senneh type the best Bijar ghileems are extremely well woven. This ghileem displays an interesting structural idiosyncracy found also on the ghileem in Plate 234; it is woven on silk warps of seven different colours in vertical strips, the remains of which can be seen at the lower end.
