Magnificent Kerman Ravar Pictorial Rug , Antique, Fine Wool

A Magnificent Persian Kerman Ravar Pictorial Rug, Southeast Persia, fine wool on cotton foundation.

The pastel polychrome field depicting two ibexes drinking at a lakeside, supported by two further ibexes in a plant and tree filled landscape below a tree branch supporting two pheasants before a pale sky with clouds and leaf adorned vine, within an ivory border enclosing continuous leaf adorned trees supporting perching birds, saffron guard borders enclosing continuous pendants.

Ravar has long been the origin of some of the finest of Persian Kerman weavings. As a result the late 17th Century conflicts associated with regional feuding Khans, much of Kerman was destroyed and a large part of the population, among them many highly skilled carpet designers and weavers, fled to the neighbouring town of Ravar where workshops became established over time.

Although the Ravar weavings display characteristic traditional features of Kerman artistry, the high quality carpets produced in Ravar soon gained recognition and significance in the ‘Revival’ of the Persian carpet weaving with carpet designs and subject matter recalling the ‘Golden Age’ of woven art, synonymous with 17th Century Safavid Dynasty (1502-1736), Royal patronage.

This is a magnificent example of Ravar woven art from the pictorial genre. The sketchy drawing style of the pattern details is typically seen in Kerman Ravar rugs of this type. Such a style can be seen in another significant group of Kerman weavings known as the ‘millefleurs’ group. This is a sublime pictorial scene which exudes a sense of peace and tranquility achieved by orientations of the animals and birds in a plant filled setting. The appearance is light and airy and depth to the composition is created by the extending branch extending from the border supporting the two pheasants. The presence of this branch and the leaf adorned sprig above present an infinite repeat element suggesting that the scene continues beyond the border frame. This is a device often seen in rug designs which gives an enhanced sense of movement to the composition. The colours are from the characteristic Kerman palette with shades of blue, green, brown and beige and supporting accent tones which have been juxtaposed in such a way as to maximise the visual impact of the composition and which ensures that this Kerman Ravar rug is an outstanding work of Kerman Ravar woven art.
