Persian Antique Senneh Rug Medallion design Kork Wool on Silk

Towards the end of the 19th century, it was not unusual for established Persian workshops to use multi coloured silk warps, likely to have been derived from classical ‘Salting Group’ and rare Moghul Indian weavings. The Kurdish urban weavers of Senneh and neighbouring Bijar whether weaving piled or flatwoven ghileems often made intricate and sophisticated products utilising such silk warps. This extremely fine Senneh rug illustrates this superbly by combining two favoured patterns combined in a characteristic Senneh style. The blue ground is woven with an intricate ‘revivalist’ version of the ‘herati’ design, and the ivory hexagonal medallion with a repeat ‘boteh’ design, extremely finely drawn in a style based on Safavid Kerman textiles. The blue centre piece encloses the continuance of the boteh theme, and whilst woven off centre does not detract from the sophisticated design, arguably, on the contrary it demonstrates individualism, since after all, this is an original work of woven art.
