Antique Kashan Mohtasham Rug Medallion design Kork Wool (Cashmere)

This Persian Kashan Mohtasham rug is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 53, p. 102.

Very few early-20th century Kashan rugs are actually signed by perhaps the most famous Persian ustad of the ‘Revival’ period, the pseudonymous Hajji Mohammad Mohatashem. However, although the few signed rugs known have several different designs, enough exist to give a fairly strong impression of what can be described as a Mohtashem style. It may not have been a style he invented, but it is certainly one he seems to have favoured. This unsigned rug, dating from the late-19th century, is absolutely typical of that style and also has a somewhat idiosyncratic palette. Like most ustadi producing large numbers of rugs, it is likely that the majority emanating from the Mohtashem workshop were not signed. One additional feature said to be an aid to recognition consists of selvedges bound in purple (or less often crimson) silk. However there is no evidence that this feature – which is, indeed, found on many early-20th century Kashan rugs of the best quality – is specific to the Mohatshem workshop.
