Fine Antique Armenian Karabakh Runner Allover design Wool Pile

This Armenian Karabakh runner is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 325, p. 402.

This spectacular Karabakh, probably woven in the Armenian enclave of Nogorny Karabakh, has a repeated pattern of three brightly-coloured stylised flower-heads in the so-called gul farangi (‘foreign flower’) pattern derived from European floral textiles via Persia; it is a design found throughout Persia from the early 19th century onwards and was much cultivated by the new Russian conquerors of the Caucasus throughout the 19th century. Military governers as well as civil servants wanted to acquire carpets in the European (particularly French) styles, but were unable to afford the genuine articles; thus they encouraged the establishment of workshops in the Caucasus, not only to provide them with high quality substitutes but also to improve the commercial viability of the area. The Impersial Russian authorities continued to encourage the establishment of weaving workshops throughout the Caucasus well into the 20th century. This example is dated 1328[AH] twice at the base and 1331[AH] twice at the top, equivalent to 1910-11AD to 1912-13AD.
