Old Caucasian Karabakh Rug Medallion design | Floral  Gol Farangi  Wool on Wool foundation

This Caucasian Karabakh rug is published in;

THE STORY OF CARPETS, Essie Sakhai, London, 1991.

p. 19.

Karabagh is the region of the huge province of Azerbaijan which straddles the borders of the old Soviet Union and Iran, a border which until this century had considerable flexibility, not surprising given the nomadic nature of many of its inhabitants. Thus many of the rugs attributed to the Karabagh have either a marked Caucasian, i.e. non-Iranian, flavour or they seem closer to the Persian weaving style. This charming small rug with a central quatrefoil medallion and gol farangi pattern of roses in Western taste is clearly Persian; although gol farangi rugs are known from the Caucasus, both the colour and the main border design of this rug are totally uncharacteristic of Caucasian weaving.
