Armenian Karabakh Rug Medallion design Fine Wool

This Armenian Karabakh rug is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 335, p. 412.

A particularly beautiful Armenian rug of about 1880 from the Karabakh area of the southern Caucasus. While clearly of Persian inspiration (the four-colour striped borders are very similar to silk textiles from both Kashan and, above all the Zoroastrian enclave of Yazd), the juxtaposition of a pinkish red (probably cochineal) with a madder red, dark blue, bottle green and yellow is typical of older Armenian Karabakh weavings. In the late-19th century, the Armenian oil entrepreneur Calouste Gulbenkian noted the existence of several villages in the Baku region where rugs were wovenn in an unequivocally Persian style.
