Fine Caucasian Karabakh Runner Allover design European influence Wool Pile

This Karabakh runner is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 323, p. 402.

Looking closely at this Armenian runner we can see that it has a European origin and was almost certainly derived from French or Italian textile. lt should be remembered that in the 18th and 19th centuries, French decorative arts were extremely popular in both Persia and Turkey as well as in Russia. Workshops in Russia and Polish Ukraine produced versions of Savonnerie carpets for local consumption and many of these workshops were probably run by Armenians. As the Russians moved south into the Caucasus, local Armenian weavers produced indigenous versions for their new rulers. These, presumably, were no cheaper than the best Russian and Ukrainian carpets, which were, in turn, much less expensive than the French originals affordable only to the wealthiest local patrons. European design became a lasting feature of the Karabakh style, as can be seen from this handsome example, which is signed and bears the Islamic date of 1333 AH and the Armenian Christian date of 1915 CE.
