Handmade Persian Tabriz Carpet – Fine Wool – Allover Design – Interlocking Palmettes

A  Fine Persian Tabriz Carpet, North West Persia, Fine Kork Wool on Cotton Foundation,

Early 20th Century

The brick red field with a central flower head supported by a mass of polychrome palmettes in varying orientations linked by curvilinear and rectilinear sinuous tendrils issuing flower heads and leaves, within a blue border enclosing red pendants alternating ochre pendants framed by two tier red and ochre continuous meandering arabesques.

This spectacular Tabriz carpet was created in the early part of the 20th century and has a stately and regal appearance, with a design of classical and steeped in tradition.

The grand design of this Persian Tabriz carpet reflects the traditions that made Tabriz famous as a carpet weaving centre. Tabriz was a city known for creating the grand court carpets of the 17th Century Safavid Dynastic period. Many of the designs created during this time would form the basis of the ‘Revivalist’ designs with which we are familiar today.

The design of this Persian Tabriz carpet is focussed around the placement of the multi coloured palmette motifs presented in varying orientations. The origin of the palmette motif goes back to the reign of Shah Abbas, who was the fifth Safavid ruler. The palmette motif along with the entire composition is found throughout this elegant piece and its origins date to that time. Often the design is symmetrical on both the vertical and horizontal axis, though in this Persian Tabriz carpet the design is only symmetrical on the vertical axis, with only minor pattern differences on the horizontal axis.

The traditional Tabriz colour palette is historically very extensive, and in this Persian Tabriz carpet can be seen a comprehensive range of complimentary colours, chosen with great care to produce the best possible artistic rendition of this classical design. Colours include varying shades of red, coral, blue, ochre, and green, superbly juxtaposed to bring the motifs alive and relevant. The blue border with ochre and red flowing arabesques framing red palmettes acts as a superb ‘frame’ enhancing the overall harmonic composition.

This Persian Tabriz carpet shows a highly developed level of skill on the part of the designer and the weavers and represents a fine Tabriz woven work of art.
