Fine Persian Tabriz Carpet Medallion design Fine Kork Wool (Cashmere) and Silk

A Fine Persian Tabriz Carpet, North West Persia, Kork Wool (Cashmere) and Silk on Silk Foundation,

Mid 20th Century

The ivory field with a lobed scrolling leaf edged pale coral medallion enclosing a lobed buff centre piece with a pale coral star filled lozenge, supported by a single tier of meandering curvilinear vines issuing pastel polychrome palmettes, flower heads ending in pastel polychrome elongated leaf clusters, pale coral pendant and buff arcaded floral inner surround, within a complementary pale coral border enclosing raceme garlands and meandering curvilinear sinuous vines issuing minute flower heads linking polychrome palmettes.

The style of design as seen in this Persian Tabriz carpet dominates a major aspect of Persian city weaving and forms a recognisable significant group dating from the mid-20th century onwards which could appropriately be described as the ‘Boudoir’ style. This style, particularly associated with Tabriz, though not exclusive, can be defined by an amalgam of French and Persian styles of design. Characteristically they tend to be made with an extremely fine weave with a kork wool and silk pile on silk foundation dyed with pale pastel colours, volumes away from earlier traditional colour palette. Historically the origins of this fusion can be traced back to mid 19th century Turkey, where, under the influence of Sultan Hamid ‘all things French, were extremely popular and which subsequently influenced local styles of design in all areas of fine and decorative art. Unsurprisingly influence spread into Persia. Furthermore there was an  increasing number of European merchants involved not only in commerce but increasingly becoming more directly involved in the design and production of carpets made specifically to appeal to western tastes to an ever increasing more affluent clientele. The ‘Boudoir’ style has proved extremely popular in western, middle-eastern and far-eastern markets. This Persian Tabriz is a fine example of the ‘Boudoir’ style displaying a mass of floral profusion drawn in characteristic fusion of styles in typical pastel tones as seen in the ‘Boudoir’ genre. The range of colours is immense, with pastel coral, buff, pale blues, dusky violet and salmon pink combined sympathetically to create a classic example of Persian Tabriz consummate artistry.
