Fine Rare, ornate Bakhtiari Khan carpet, exemplary jewel like dyes with sophisticated multi medallion design

The inscription reading in Farsi; ‘Farmaueshe Jenabe Matin Homayun, amale Bakhtiari ‘

Translation, ‘To the honourable Mr. Matin Bakhtiari, work of Bakhtiari’

This is one of the large and impressive Bakhtiari carpets made in the Chahar Mahal Valley. The majority – including this example – date from the early 20th century and were often made for the large villas built by Bakhtiari khans in the Chahar Mahal. It has an all-over tight inter locking tile pattern formed from octafoil stars and crosses. This pattern has a very long history: related versions are to be seen on Seljuk carpets dating from the 13th to 14th centuries that were found in Turkish mosques. This Bakhtiari carpet bears a long woven inscription giving the name of the individual khan who commissioned the piece. Typically, the colours are from the magnificent saturated palette of which the Bakhtiari weavers are famous for. Their use of saffron is always used with great skill to maximise the visual impact of the composition.
