In its general arrangement, this rug clearly follows Persian models. Its
palette and style of ‘drawing’, however, indicate that it is not of Persian origin. It is, in
fact, Spanish, and although not signed, may be from the Royal Carpet Manufactory
in Madrid. Such rugs are most often of large size and can have designs of European
as well as Oriental inspiration. The history of carpet weaving in Spain has a long and
very distinguished history, having probably been introduced by the Moors in the 8th
century. c.1920.

This piece was handwoven in Spain. For further information please contact us and our team will be pleased to assist you. All pieces in the collection are under the auspices of Essie Sakhai, one of the world’s foremost experts and collectors of fine handmade Persian rugs and carpets.
