Superb Fine Circular Persian Qum Rug Medallion design Silk on Silk foundation

The city of Qum is a recently established centre for the weaving of urban style rugs with workshops appearing there from around 1927 onwards. It rapidly became a significant and important centre for the creation of technically extremely fine silk rugs and carpets, though fine wool pile rugs are also made there. The repertoire of their designs is varied, ranging from designs based on Safavid Persian traditions of the 16th and 17th Centuries, through to individual creative designs of unparalleled technical and artistic visual excellence, which can often be described as ground breaking.

This remarkable Qum silk circular rug displays a magnificent architectural inspired design. Traditional Persian elements are presented in a new and distinctive way. On a light ivory ground, sets of thin vines curl in  perfectly executed circles ending in rumi or split palmettes. They swirl around a complex multi-layered shamsa medallion, drawn with extreme detail resulting in a magnificent elegant appearance. This swirling pattern often referred to as the islemi or snake pattern. These swirls give a great sense of movement to the overall composition. The arcaded border acts like an ‘architectural’ frame which, combined with the field pattern gives the impression of  looking up into an elaborate domed ceiling . The complexion is pale with the pattern presented in outstanding pastel toned colours throughout, with tones of terracotta and beige enhanced with pale blue, saffron and green including contrasting dark blue details and outlining.
