Exceptional Persian kashan carpet, old, allover design, fine wool on cotton foundation, published.

This Persian Kashan carpet is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 67,  p. 114.

This carpet displays a complex and original versions of the Herati pattern,
a pattern that over the centuries has lent itself to any number of variations
on both Persian and Indian carpets (a famous pair of 17th-18th century Moghal
Indian carpets, now known only from a number of discontinuous fragments,
was shown some years ago to be using the Herati repeat, although all the
floral elements had been substituted for grotesque (animal heads and birds).
On this carpet, more usual somewhat geometricised floral elements have been
rendered in a far more lavish and curvilinear fashion; as usual, there are
two large interlocking elements, one consisting of a small, central,
starlike flower with eight dark-blue petals flanked by four large curving
racemes of pale-blue blossoms, the other larger one centred around a
diamond with curving sides containing an eight-pointed star flower
(pale-blue and dark-blue in alternating rows), the diamond flanked by
inward curving dark-blue racemes and with a large pendant and semicircular
floral spray above and below. To make matters more complicated,
both these elements interlock with secondary elements on
the horizontal axis to form a dense overall pattern in which the eye is
vaguely aware of repeated elements without this distracting it from the
sense of a floral profusion without beginning or end. Wool pile on a
cotton foundation.
