Caucasian Karabakh Runner Allover design | Floral Wool Pile

This Armenian Karabakh runner is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 347, p. 422.

This is a Karabakh long rug from the Armenian enclave in the Karabakh district of Azerbaijan. The latter is a vast state once part of Persia but, since the 19th century, split in two with the part north of the present Iranian border conquered by the Tsarist armies of the Russian Empire, then becoming part of the U.S.S.R. (as the Azerbaijan S.S.R.) and now a war-torn and internally divided sovereign state, while the southern part remains part of Iran. Karabakh has been celebrated for its village weavings since at least the early-19th century and the history of weaving there is undoubtedly much older than that. This example, although falling into the difficult area defined by rug literature as ‘Caucasian’, is nevertheless almost purely Persian in taste with an elegant version of an ubiquitous field design called the mina khani. This design is thought to have originated in north-west Persia and is today particularly associated with rugs from Veramin. c.1890.
