The appearance of European designs on
south Caucasian carpets from the late-18th
century onwards is the result of a complex
history. As in Persia, the gul farangi
(foreign flower) pattern – derived
from French carpets and textiles – also
proved very popular in the Caucasus
among the Armenian weavers who, like
their cousins in Persia, played a major rôle
in carpet production in the area. However,
there was an added historical and com –
mercial perspective: when the area came
under Russian domination in the 19th
century, the new administrators settling in
the area as both military and civilian
governors, were strongly Francophile and
wanted weavings that looked vaguely
French, but where not as expensive as the
French originals. On this mid-20th century
Karabakh carpet the floral bouquets in the
field and the repeated sprays of roses in
the border have returned to a realism that
earlier examples tended not to have.
