Fine Persian Bidjar Carpet Allover design Fine Wool Pile

This Persian Bidjar carpet is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 224, p. 282.

This is a marvellous rug from Bijar, in a Kurdish enclave of north-west Persia, and probably dates from the late-19th century. The pairs of lions at either end have the same splendid naivety as the now better-known examples on tribal gabbeh rugs from Fars. However, this purely Persian image is combined with a complex and beautifully drawn all-over field that probably owes its origin to European textiles, specifically to the weavings of Savonnerie and Aubusson. This hypothesis is enforced by the fact that the repeated ivory and red floral motif in a sky blue ground is a version of the gol farangi or ‘foreign flower’ design. This rug also has exceptional colour and design. Fine wool pile on a wool foundation.
