Baktiari Runner Medallion design Wool Pile

This Persian Bakhtiari runner is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 222, p. 278.

An unusual Bakhtiari gabbeh from Fars from the early-20th century. The majority of Bakhtiari pile weavings are from the Chahar Mahal Valley west of Esfahan; this rare gabbeh, however, is from further to the south west. Almost all Fars gabbeh, thickly piled ‘ peasant’ rugs with naïve designs, are by the Qashqa’i tribes but certain elements of the design of this example, particularly the main border with its multi-coloured diagonal stripes, the form of the central yellow medallion and the gol farangi elements are all far more typical of the Bakhtiari, as is the overall palette.
