Signed Persian Kashan Rug Allover design Wool Pile

This Persian Kashan rug is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 52, p. 102.

This Kashan rug is signed by the ustad Mohammad Dabir Sanaye. Its design is of interest for taking familiar motifs from 16th and 17th century Persian carpets – Shah Abbas palmettes of various kinds, split palmettes (rumi), curved leaves (saz) etc. – and giving them a recognisably modern garb. The main border, however, is rendered in a more traditional manner, almost as if to point up the contrast.
