Antique French Aubusson Flatweave

This French Aubusson carpet is published in;

THE PERSIAN CARPET, ‘The Fabric of Life’, Essie Sakhai, Woodbridge, 2008.

pl. 362.  pp. 438-439.

Although there is only a peripheral connection between this
mid-19th century Aubusson carpet in slit tapestry (kelim) technique and
the main subject of this book, it is worth pointing out that the principal
elements seen here – a central shamsa-like medallion and four corner
elements in the field, a main border with a continuous floral meander and
outer guard stripes – together constitute the classic Persian carpet lay-out
here transposed to a European context. There can be little doubt that such
designs would not have appeared in European workshops were it not for
the contact with Eastern carpets, which can be traced back to the
returning crusaders in the late 11th and 12th centuries.

Antique France, Aubusson, Kilim handwoven from wool in the mid-19th century.
