Very Fine Persian Afshar Rug Allover design Fine Wool

The Afshar are a tribal people of Turkic origin (i.e. Central Asian) origin who can now be found in many different areas of the Middle East, including earstern Anatolia, north- west Iran, east Iran in the province of Khorasan and in small numbers, in Fars in south-west Iran. The principal group, however, is located in south-central Iran in the Kerman province, particularly in and around the town of Sirjan. The Afshars are well known for a variety of weavings in different media. The majority of their pile weavings are of fairly small size and a square orientated format. Although all are symmetrically knotted, the earliest examples are on wool foundations with cotton replacing wool towards the end of the 19th century. The best examples of Afshar weaving are finely knotted, with exceptional velvety wool and deep, rich jewel like colours. This is particularly true of Afshar rugs woven with deep blue-black (surmey) grounds, which can be among the most beautiful of all Persian tribal weavings, although, not surprisingly, they make up a very small percentage of many Afshar rugs, both old and comparatively new.
